4 Easy Ways To Promote Sustainability & Reduce our Impact
Making these small but essential changes help the Earth.
The choices we make, whether big or small, always affect the world around us. What we wear, drive, eat, and more can all impact our lives, other living things, the environment, the climate, and even the generations from now. Here are things we can do today to promote sustainability and reduce our impact on tomorrow.
1. Conserve water
Water conservation is always a critical issue. With a global population currently at 7.81 billion, the demand for clean water will only keep rising. It is then the role of every person to use the water supply and support water sustainability ideas. for example:
a. Take shorter showers,
b. Fix leaky water sources.
c. Reuse water.
d. Buy low-water appliances.
e. Buy or plant drought-adapted plants.
f. Do not toss chemicals down the drain.
2. Redesign your home around Green energy
“Energy Efficient” is not a bandwagon term slapped in products to boost sales with no real meaning. Products with it have a tangible impact on your energy use and, more significantly, your energy bill. “Energy Efficient” means getting the job done while using the right amount of energy with little to no energy wasted. And these come in all forms, from TV to washing machines, lightbulbs to thermostats, and everything in between. Providing proper insulation to your home also means needing less energy during the blazing summer heats and freezing winter colds. Using solar energy through solar panels and solar water heating will also save you more money in the long term. Switching to energy-efficient energy suppliers is also a sustainable practice. These suppliers rely on clean, renewable sources like solar, wind, and water. Some states even give tax credits and incentives for going green. (In future blogs, we will expand more on each topic.)
3. Support companies that practice sustainability.
More than 90% of products have labels that say at least one of these terms: organic, eco-friendly, green, sustainable. These terms are all the rage today because customers lean towards choosing products with these labels. The most comprehensive name among the four is “sustainable” since it includes the other three’s meaning. Sustainability means that the product uses regenerative and organic farming with a production process that has minimal impact on the environment while practicing a fair and non-exploitative business model. Products made from animals, especially endangered, are not sustainable and are illegal. (In future blogs, we will expand more on each topic.)
4. Walk, drive less or go Green.
One of the primary sources of pollution is traveling. Changing your commuting habits can significantly reduce how much carbon footprint you are making. Instead of driving your gas-guzzling car to a place that is close by, why not walk. Other methods of commuting are riding a bike, carpool, and mass transportation. If using a car is unavoidable, there are efficient models you can purchase or lease; for example, an electric or even a hybrid vehicle will benefit you in the long run. When going on errands, combine them and have fewer stops. Also, keep your car regularly tuned-up to make sure your engines are efficiently using gas.
